VERIFY THE SHAPE

Use the builder to start, then let PowerShell confirm the syntax

PowerShell commands can have multiple parameter sets. A plausible-looking command is not enough; check what the installed command actually supports.

Confirm the command exists

1PS> Get-Command Get-Service
2PS> Get-Help Get-Service -Full

Use Get-Command to resolve the command and Get-Help to inspect syntax, parameter sets and examples for your installed version.

Inspect before changing state

1PS> Get-Help Set-Service -Examples
2PS> Get-Service -Name Spooler

For Set-, New-, Remove-, Stop- and Restart- commands, query the target first and verify the result afterward. Use -WhatIf when the command supports it.
