Practical use and troubleshooting
Practical scenario: Use Get-Team when you need to inventory Microsoft Teams and check account visibility limits. Start with one identified target and inspect the returned values before extending the operation to a list. Keep the identity in your report so you can trace each result back to the object or path that produced it.
Common error and fix: Multiple teams matching -DisplayName can be expected because it acts as a filter. Resolve the intended GroupId and query that unique identifier instead of selecting the first name match. In an unattended script, capture this failure with its original error record and record which target failed. An empty result and an unsuccessful query must remain distinguishable in the final report.
See also: Get-MgGroup. Get-Team reads Teams-backed team information; Get-MgGroup reads Graph group objects. A Microsoft 365 group is not necessarily a team, and display names are not unique identifiers. Read the linked command before substituting it; similar names do not imply identical inputs or output.
