Practical use and troubleshooting
Practical scenario: Use Test-Path when you need to return $true or $false for whether a path exists — the guard to run before reading, writing, or deleting. Start with one identified target and inspect the returned values before extending the operation to a list. Keep the identity in your report so you can trace each result back to the object or path that produced it.
Common error and fix: A false result can come from testing relative to the wrong working directory. Check Get-Location, use an absolute path and distinguish an expected missing item from a failed operation. In an unattended script, capture this failure with its original error record and record which target failed. An empty result and an unsuccessful query must remain distinguishable in the final report.
See also: Resolve-Path. Test-Path answers whether a path exists; Resolve-Path returns matching resolved paths. A false existence check is different from obtaining a canonical location. Read the linked command before substituting it; similar names do not imply identical inputs or output.
