See what a PowerShell object actually contains

Guide 1 min read Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7

Documentation: Microsoft Learn

A PowerShell table is only a view. Expand one object, reveal the properties the default display hides, then build a Select-Object command from the properties you actually need.

Object diagram

The displayed columns are not the whole object

Get-Process may show Name, Id and CPU, but the process object still carries many more properties. PowerShell can pass those hidden properties to the next command even when the console does not display them.

This table is a view. It does not delete the other properties from the object.

Use this model when a command surprises you

Inspect with Get-Member, select the property you need, then filter or sort on that property. This is more reliable than guessing from whatever columns happened to be printed.

Continue in Pipeline Inspector to watch those objects move through a real pipeline model.
