Why use server-side AD filtering?
Documentation: Microsoft Learn
-Filter on Get-ADUser beats Where-Object — test why filtering at the source wins.
Overview
QUIZ
Core PowerShell · Question 10 of 12
Explanation
It reduces client-side data transfer and lets the directory service do the filtering.
Apply the reasoning
Get-ADUser -Filter asks the directory to constrain the result before sending it to the client. A subsequent Where-Object filter operates on data already retrieved. Server-side filtering is especially useful when a directory contains far more objects than the report needs.
Why the other choices fail
Filtering does not grant administrator privileges or bypass directory access controls. AD cmdlets still return objects rather than formatted strings. The filter does not automatically request every extra property: select the required attributes with Properties, then project the report fields. Use SearchBase when the organizational-unit scope is also known.
